The Government of Lesotho (GOL) is implementing a UNDP/GEF Sustainable Energy for All project aimed at catalyzing investment in renewable energy mini-grids and Energy Centres to reduce GHG emissions and contribute to the achievement of Lesotho Vision 2020 and SE4ALL goals. Through the participation of the private sector, the project will improve access to clean energy services by rural communities in the five districts of Mokhotlong, Thaba Tseka, Quthing Mohale’s Hoek and Qacha’s Nek. It will put in place an enabling environment for the development of these renewable energy systems and develop a suitable business model and financial instruments for their viability and replicability. The key implementing partner is the Ministry of Energy and Meteorology. The project budget amounts to $3,900,000 ($3,500,000 GEF and $400,000 UNDP). The project implementation commenced in October 2016, and is scheduled to last for five years.
