Mr. Salvator Niyonzima, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative

Mr. Salvator Niyonzima (Burundi) has been appointed as the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Lesotho.

Before this appointment, Mr. Niyonzima was UNAIDS Inter-Country Director for Comoros, Mauritius, Madagascar and Seychelles, based in Madagascar (2015-2017).

He served as UNAIDS Country Director in Burkina Faso (2012-2015), Gabon (2008-2012) and Namibia (2004-2008). From 2000-2004, M. Niyonzima was an Advisor with UNAIDS in Geneva. Prior to this assignment, he spent a year as a Focal Point, Greater Involvement of People Living with or affected by HIV and AIDS, with UNAIDS in Geneva (1999-2000). Before joining UNAIDS, Mr. Niyonzima was Chief of Cabinet with the Ministry of Finance in Burundi (1997-1999).

He was also a Lecturer with the University of Burundi (1988-1997) and he served three years as a Junior Advisor at the Office of the President of Burundi (1988-1991). Mr. Niyonzima began his career as a French Language Teacher and Deputy Principal of a high school in Bujumbura (1985-1987).

Mr. Niyonzima holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from California State University, Fresno (USA), a Port-Graduate Diploma from Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Burundi, Bujumbura.

Mr. Niyonzima speaks French and English.

Ms. Christy Ahenkora - UNDP Deputy Resident Representative 

Ms. Christy Ahenkora is the UNDP Deputy Representative in Lesotho, with responsibility for both programmes and operations. Prior to joining Lesotho in September, 2015, she served as the Head of Programmes in UNDP Ghana, where she started her career with the United Nations in November, 2000 as a National Programme Officer.

Prior to joining UNDP, Christy worked in the civil service of Ghana and on various World Bank and UNDP funded programmes in the areas of Decentralisation, Local Economic Development and Poverty Reduction.

Christy is a Development Economist with expertise in Development Planning and Management; Programme/Project Planning and Management; Private Sector Development, Decentralisation and Local Economic Development.

She holds a Master of Science degree in Survey Integration for Resources Development, with specialisation in Programme Planning and Management and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Development Planning.
