The Ministry of Development Planning, with support from the European Union (EU) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will hold a 5-day Basic Statistics Training.

The main objectives of this training is:

·         To equip BOS field and clerical staff with relevant skills in Basic Statistics.

·         To improve understanding of processes that lead to production of official statistics.

·         To improve data quality in the official statistics.

This training will be at Khotsong Lodge, Thaba-Bosiu on 14th-18thMay 2018. This workshop-based training is the first of three planned trainings aimed at strengthening the capacity of the Bureau of Statistics (BOS) to generate quality statistics. These trainings target all field and clerical staff of the BOS.

The Lesotho Data for Sustainable Development Project was launched in February 2017 and is being implemented by the Ministry of Development Planning through the Department of Monitoring and Evaluation and the Bureau of Statistics. The project aims at assisting the Government of Lesotho in the collection, analysis and dissemination of development data and building capacities for evidence based planning, reporting, and monitoring and evaluation. The project is jointly funded by the European Union and UNDP.

The Data Gap Analysis conducted under the Lesotho Data for Sustainable Development Project made it possible to (I) evaluate data gaps and data availability based on the principles for effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and (II) assess the capacity strengthening required to track and monitor the National Strategic Development Plan (NSDP), SDGs and the Agenda 2063. Notably, the Data Gap Analysis proposed several capacity building initiatives which include this Basic Statistics Training, as one of the measures for strengthening the National Statistics System (NSS). Field and clerical staff of BOS are an important component in data collection, data editing, data coding and data capturing.

The National University of Lesotho (NUL), through the Department of Statistics and Demography has been contracted to conduct this Basic Statistics training for 150 field and clerical staff of the Bureau of Statistics.

This training will run in three batches as follows:

1.         Central Region, the training will be held at Khotsong lodge, Thaba-Bosiu in Maseru from 14th to 18th May 2018
